Summary of Challenge:

Aconcagua is one of the seven great summits of the world.  It is the highest mountain in the Western and Southern Hemispheres at 22,837 ft., and is located in the Andes mountain range within the province of Mendoza, Argentina.

CWVC Challenge Warriors were eager to test themselves on this ascent.  No hard records are kept, but the Provincial Park reports a success rate of about 60% of climbers that attempt the mountain.  In mountaineering terms, Aconcagua is technically an easy mountain if approached from the north,  via the normal route.  The routes to the peak from the south and southwest ridges are more demanding, and the south face climb is considered very difficult.

Aconcogua-combat-wounded-challengeThe Challenge Warriors are aided in their recovery through arduous wilderness adventures such as these, that create an environment which instill a mentality to overcome obstacles, foster independence and helps them regain camaraderie with fellow wounded veterans. They realize that if they can climb a mountain, then life’s demands can be met with the same type of endurance and attitude.

As part of the Challenge, an evidenced-based series of case studies was conducted for Orthotics and Prosthetics, as well as therapy centered around TBI and PTS treatment. Expeditions such as these would not be possible without generous donor support. Sponsorship opportunities remain available to underwrite future challenges such as this.  If you are interested, please contact us.
