Summary of Day Two Sailing Challenge

All veteran/active duty participants and their families were involved in sailing today. Morning instruction included “parts of the boat” and “points of sail” chalk talks followed by rigging and sailing. Everyone rigged and sailed the Sonars under jib and main despite occasional rain showers with a tropical low offshore. Breeze was from the northeast at about 15 knots. During the second half of the day, the wind increased to upwards of 30 knots, so everyone sailed under main alone. Seven Sonars left the dock, and fortunately J seven returned.

Also during the afternoon, families went sailing on a large catamaran for a voyage into West Galveston Bay.

Jeannie and Judy (sisters) hosted another delicious dinner. After the meal, everyone participated in a roundtable discussion of sailing’s lessons-learned and events-enjoyed. Later, rain bands dampened a hoped-for bonfire.

Having “boots on the ground” (i.e., sailing boots on the boats) contributed to yesterday’s successes. CWVC is very well lead by Dave Caras, and Deb and Joe Pawlowski. On the SSBG side, Dave Gaston and Mike Janota lead the generous volunteer sailors.
