Since 2005, St. Petersburg College has been a national leader in developing and providing Orthotics and Prosthetics training, blazing a trail through its $11-million J.E. Hanger College of Orthotics and Prosthetics. This expanding allied health field involves evaluating, fabricating and custom fitting artificial limbs and orthopedic braces to help rehabilitate patients with disabling conditions. SPC is one of 13 Orthotic & Prosthetic programs in the nation, and only one of five technician programs.
In partnership with Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge, graduate students are immersed in cutting edge field work involving case studies and data collection. The work conducted on the various expeditions provides hands-on learning and valuable data that lead to breakthrough gains in the field of orthotics and prosthetics. SPC graduate students have participated in major expeditions such as the Scuba Challenge in Key West, Mt. Kilimanjaro Challenge, Grand Canyon hiking /pack rafting Challenge, Minnesota Cross Country Skiing Challenge and Alaska Challenges.
